The following information on the CRS Supercharger kit for V6 Holdens, is designed to answer some of the questions that could arise if you are considering supercharging a Holden V6. Many of these also apply to Supercharging the Holden 6 cylinder Red, Black or Blue engine and Nissan RB30. See their respective pages for more information. For further supercharger information contact us.
There are a number of different kits made to suit all the known combinations, VN-VP-VR with air conditioning and without air conditioning. These models all have metal sumps and the air intake is at the rear of the motor. If using in a car where no power steering is fitted for example: Torana and Gemini, CRS make an Idler Jockey to allow the pump to be removed from the motor, the pump pulley is then bolted back and the belt refitted. No belt is available to run without the pump or idler fitted. This model is a bolt up installation except for one single weld which must be done to attach a bracket supplied to the steel alternator mount, CRS will do the job at no extra charge if the alternator bracket is mailed to us. No changing to the computer or any other part of the engine is required.
The blowers are from the 2 litre 6 cylinder Toyota’s and have been cleaned, checked and modified, the clutch operation has also been checked, the front pulley has been removed and an extra groove machined to match the Commodore belt. A new belt is supplied in the kit. Some VN-VP-VR models were supplied with no air conditioning fitted or when the motor is fitted to another vehicle where the air has been removed a different length belt is supplied. The fitting instructions explain the full installation, please state if no air is fitted when ordering.
VS Models: Known as Ecotec, they have alloy sumps and the air intake is on the side of the motor. This is a different kit to the earlier models and has different items and instructions. All have air conditioning fitted, only standard home enthusiast tools are required to fit these blower kits.
VT & VX Models: These all had air conditioning fitted but the compressor runs a different sized front drive so the kit for this model has a different length belt and different sized idler and bracket. Please be sure to state your model when ordering as everything will be wrong. These models require a computer chip for the blower to work properly. These chips are available from Castle Auto Electrics, they can be contacted by phone on 03 54721442.
Some of the Questions Asked:
What is the expected power increase? We have recorded between 25 and 30% power increase depending on the engine and if extractors and exhaust modifications have been carried out.
What boost? Most motors read between and two and three and a half pounds.
Can I increase this? No, as the ratio is preset and this kit is 100% reliable and if more pressure is made a lot of motor work and computer re-chipping will be required.
Can I leave it on all the time? Yes, but that is not the idea of it. In our later model kits we supply a switch which is installed into the throttle mechanism which will allow the blower to be switched off when the throttle reaches a certain setting to suit yourself. Normally a manual overriding on/off switch is installed within easy reach for on/off operation.
Do I have to change the chip? No, but if you choose to upgrade a performance gain will be achieved but be careful and seek advice on the correct chip.
Do I use standard Unleaded Fuel? It is recommended to use Premium Unleaded as several customers have reported a slight pinging under certain conditions.
Can I fit it to a Modified Motor? No, this kit is designed to give a cheap power increase and if the cam has been given any extra overlap from standard it will not perform as well.
How much does the kit weigh? The complete package weighs 20 kg.
Is any re-wiring necessary? No, all wiring is supplied and instructions are very clear with diagrams and text.
How much does it cost to deliver? New South Wales $45 to $50; Queensland $55 to $60; Western Australia $75 to $95; South Australia $40 to $45; Northern Territory $75 to $85; Victoria $30 to $35.
Who delivers it? Ipec or Fastway, depending on location. We can send it COD by Australia Post if required.
What is the Warranty? All parts are new and the blowers are secondhand but cleaned and checked over, a 30 day warranty is given to allow time to fit.
What if I have my own blower? Send it to us and we will modify it for you and approx. $350.00 can be removed from the price.
Is it Noisy? The blower itself is not that noisy, but we only supply an air pod, if the blower was hooked up to an air box or cold air intake the noise would be reduced considerably.
What happens to the coil pack? It is relocated to the inner guard and longer leads are included in the kit along with instructions.
How long does it take to fit? A competent person could fit it between 7 and 9 hours.
What oil is used in the blower? The blowers come ready to use with sealed bearings at the front, the oil used in the rear can be any light gear oil such as Castrol VMX 80 or equivalent.
Are any other costs involved? No, not another thing is required above what is supplied in the kit.
What happens to the fuel consumption? Depending on how it is driven people have reported improved economy when used as designed. We have not noticed any measurable decline.
What happens to performance when the blower is not switched on? Nothing happens as the clutch is free wheeling as on an air conditioner and when not switched on the vacuum from the motor rotate the rotors by themselves.
Does the fitting of this kit affect my Insurance or Warranty? I don’t think it would as it is not constantly engaged, but you would need to check if this concerns you.
Can an Intercooler be fitted? No, it is not needed and can’t be fitted without major work.
Is an Engineers report needed? No.
How long does a blower last? These units are fitted by Toyota at the factory as a standard item and as at November 2001 the oldest one fitted has seen 2 years of constant use plus however much use it had prior to fitting to the V6.
Does the motor run hot? We have not been able to detect any significant increase.
Do I have to change the Map Sensor on the early models? No, as the map sensor will work under vacuum or pressure.
At what rpm is the blower engaged? We suggest not to engage it above 2500 rpm as clutch damage could occur, but because the rotors are rotating it is not that hard on it.
What is the cost? $1900.00 without supercharger, $2400.00 including supercharger (plus freight).
Water Injection. It will decrease inlet air temperature therefore power increase. We have had good results using it and recommend it on VT & VX models.
Special Small Drive Pulley. We have one available with a belt to suit, however if this pulley is used the boost will be up to double but you will not be able to retain the clutch operation. The cost of the pulley and belt is $400.00.
"Warranty". All new accessories 3 months, blowers 30 days from fitting. Any parts not fitted correctly will not be covered. Any competent person can fit the kit or Rod Shop offer a fitting service on an hourly rate. We also specialise in one off applications and can adapt superchargers to your application. |
